Rehabilitation desert community complex, petrified Forest National Park

Stronghold Engineering is proud to be part of the rehabilitation of the historic Painted Desert Community Complex at Petrified Forest National Park. As a designated National Historic Landmark, the complex represents an important chapter of mid-century park architecture, and this project focuses on carefully restoring the site while upgrading key infrastructure for modern use. The work involves stabilizing and rehabilitating several buildings across the complex, preserving the original character of the structures while improving their long-term durability and safety. Exterior building elements, masonry components, and structural features are being restored or replaced where necessary, ensuring the historic architecture remains intact while meeting today’s building standards.

Inside the buildings, the project includes upgrades to interior spaces and the installation of modern building systems such as mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection. New accessibility improvements, including the installation of an elevator, will enhance the visitor experience and provide better access throughout the complex. The work also includes improvements to site infrastructure, including updated drainage systems, concrete walkways, and landscaping that complements the surrounding desert environment.

A key focus of the project is balancing preservation with modernization—maintaining the historical integrity of the complex while ensuring the facilities can continue serving park staff and visitors for decades to come. Once completed, the revitalized Painted Desert Community Complex will stand as a renewed landmark within Petrified Forest National Park, honoring its historic legacy while supporting the park’s ongoing operations and public engagement.
